Fill in the blanks não dá

During class, students will be asked to point out to the teacher where the differences are. You can use vocabulary from Unit 2 and things in the image as references. Get ready to test your spatial notion and your abilities of observation!

Groceries

Hey, guys

This activity involves something pretty frequent in our daily lives: doing groceries!

There is a grocery list attached to this activity (source here). Your activity is divided into 3 parts:

Part 1: Pantry

An efficient visit to the supermarket involves taking a look at the pantry before anything. This prevents you from buying useless stuff by impulse.

To do this, use this virtual dice and, for each category in the grocery list, check the number taken on the dice. For example, if you take 2 for the Fridge category, check two things on the list. This means that these things are available in your pantry, so you may not need more of them.

Part 2: Plans for the next days

From the list below, choose one or more activities you plan to do for the next few days and, based on them, decide what you need for your groceries list.

  1. Your son’s birthday;
  2. Spring cleaning;
  3. Watch a soccer game on Sunday;
  4. Bake a cake;
  5. Make lunch for your family;
  6. Start a diet;
  7. Use your salary at the end of the month to replenish the pantry.

Part 3: Go to the supermarket

As you buy, decide which prices are worthy and which ones are not. Justify your decisions. Example:

I need to buy some stuff for my son’s birthday. He loves chocolate cake, so I’ll take this cocoa powder with baking soda. We also need soft drinks, but I think I’ll buy these somewhere else: they are too expensive at this place. Let’s see what else I have in my list… yes, I almos forgot. Eggs! I’ll use some of them for the birthday, and the rest for breakfasts.

Since I am here, I’ll also take onions, parsley and pasta to prepare lunch later this month. He will complain, but I won’t bring him cookies. They have too much added sugar.

Pregnancy

Proposed Activity:
All the work you will develop in this Forum intends to approach all linguistic competences we shall study this semester.
Let’s imagine a friend or classmate of yours got pregnant. Until delivery date, many details and responsabilities will ensue. No matter how much the couple prepare themselves, there is always something we’ll only realize way after delivery. So, your task is to help. Come up with ideas, tips and instructions.
Example of posts using some of the competences we’ll study:

[Student 1] “Next week we have our first appointment with our new gynechologist, a man. Our health insurance does not cover the appointment, but my wife insisted on seeing him. She is feeling unsafe because of her previous diabetes diagnosis a few years back. Do you have any suggestions of what to ask him?”

[Student 2] [Reply] “I know a great doctor if you need a second opinion. His office is in Baker street, on fourth floor at Holmes bldg. From your house, walk four blocks along Hyde Park and get the subway station across the street, next to a bakery. Stop at the third station and you’re there.”

[Student 3] [Reply] “I think my sister-in-law saw him during her pregnancy. Her girl was born premature, and his advice was key for a safe delivery. She and her husband went out for lunch on a Saturday, and they came back home only after midnight. The reason? Her blood pressure skyrocketed and they rushed to the hospital, and they kept her under observation until it was safe to do the delivery.”

[Student 4][Reply]”Guys, I am a medicine student and I work as a midwife. I have lectured for pregnant woman for about five years, and I would like to help. Send a private message to me later.”

1.5 Minimum size of a post: 100 words. Minimum size of a reply: 50 words.

Punishment, however, will not be on the grade: a student who is penalized will not be able to post or reply for 9 days. In case of reincidence, the student will not be able to post or reply for 18 days. If this abusive behavior persists, this issue may be brought to the coordination, and other providences might be decided.
3.2 If trolling is detected, all posts of the student will be worth half the original points.

Let’s make a reservation

Hey, guys

I’m not sure about you, but I love traveling. And everything starts with a hotel reservation. This detail should be arranged even before the plane tickets.

But first, check the image below:

Write two texts to a friend, telling about your next trip. The activity is divided into 2 parts.

Part 1: Access a website for hotel reservations, such as Booking.com. Any site is Ok. Choose a place to stay (options are below) for five days, on February 2022.

  • Paris;
  • Cartagena;
  • Lisbon

Do a search on the website for hotels available on the date. Choose one, and check for the services you need. In your text for a friend, describe the details of your stay. Bring many details: how the hotel is like, its location, the famous things that are close to it…

Check my example below:

Hey, buddy. Let me tell you about my next trip. I’ll be in Toronto in February 2022! I found a great hotel in downtown Toronto. The name is InterContinental Toronto Centre. It is located at only 110 meters from the Convention Center and the CN Tower. I heard the view from town is awesome there. It is a pretty luxurious place: they have spa services, covered swimming pool and their own restaurant! There is even a cultural center close to it, the Harbourfront Centre.

I am going with my girlfriend, and I checked if they have hairdrier and robes. They do. And the best part for me, is that I won’t be without my daily workout: they have a 24-hour gym! The biggest issue is the weather: we will get something between 0 and -10 degrees when we get there. I’m going to need a new jacket. Wish us luck!

Ok, that’s the first part. now let’s go to Part 2.

Part 2: During the trip, everything was just fine and you had lots of fun. But something happened: your flight has been cancelled and you’ll only be able to get the next flight the next day. Tell your friend how you managed to come back home. Explain if the hotel offered you an alternative. Check the example below.

Hey, man. It’s been a while since we last talked. I was supposed to come back to Brazil today, but I’ll be able to get a flight only for tomorrow. Since I wanted to relax as much as possible, I didn’t check my e-mails as often as usual, and I missed an important message from the air company. My flight has been canceled due to the bad weather conditions: it has rained more than usual here, and planes can’t land on the airport. I tried to explain this at the front desk, but the hotel staff told me they cannot offer me a half daily rate. After all of this, I took a decision: I’ll wait for…

Get ready for a wedding

Hey, guys

To close this semester, I have one last activity divided into five parts. Check back the content from the book to help you out. This is necessary because you guys are going to have to prepare yourselves for an important event: a friend’s wedding!

Yes, that’s right: time goes by, some of our friends find true love and decide to tie the knot. Obviously, you’re invited, and your mission is to prepare everything for the big day. Check out the list of chores below:

  1. Buy a gift from the wedding list;
  2. Schedule a day at the hair salon;
  3. Rent or buy a dress/suit;
  4. Confirm your attendance (RSVP);
  5. Tell the taxi driver where the marriage is going to happen.

I know that’s a lot of things to settle, so let’s begin step by step. Write each part of the activity in the form of a dialogue. Minimum 500 words. Check out some examples below.

Part 1John: Hey, have you heard Luke is going to get married?Charles: Of course I have! I’ll be the best-man.John: Man, it seems like forever since we last saw each other. We used to hang out since college, I know the guy very well, but I still don’t know what to buy him…Charles: This week I found out they set up a website for the wedding. There is a checklist available.John: Oh, that’s a good idea. I’ll take a look to have a few ideas… and you? What are you buying for the couple?Charles: I thought of something big, for daily use, like a couch.(…)Part 2  [phone call]Attendant: Hello, Jassa Hair Salon, how can I help you?John: Oh, hi. I have a marriage to attend next weekend. I’d like to make an appointment for a hairdresser this Thursday.Attendant: When would you like to come, Mr…John: Mr. Hess. 5 o’clock, if possible.Attendant: Let me check. Thursday has an opening for 7 o’clock.John: Actually, that’s too late for me. Is someone available at 2 o’clock?Attendant: Yes. Gabriel will see you then.
Part 3[inside a suit rental store]Charles: Hello, I’d like to rent a suit for next week. We spoke on the phone earlier today.Attendant: Certainly, sir. Let me get your suit.[Charles gets the suits and tries it]Charles: I don’t know… the pants seem too small for me. What do you think?Attendant: Let me check… that’s true, sir. I’m so sorry. Maybe someone mismatched the pants. I’ll be right back.[Charles tries the other pants the attendant brought him]Charles: That’s a lot better. Listen, what tie color would you recommend for a wedding? For a best-man, more specifically…Attendant: Well, sir. First thing to do is to check with the groom the tie he is going to wear. This helps you to choose a suitable color. Some people make up rules for choosing the clothes people wear at their wedding, so check this before choosing a tie.Charles: That’s a good advice. Thanks. I’ll pay it with credit card.(…)Part 4[on the phone]Luke: Hello?John: Hey, Luke. Long time no see.Luke: Yes. I guess we haven’t spoken since Irene’s party.John: Irene’s party. I’m not sure if I went to that one. It’s been so many years…Luke: Oh, I’ll sure remember that day forever. That’s when I met my fiancée.John: Really? Man, we need to catch up on old times. I was so wasted that day, some things I can’t remember…Luke: True. A trip down memory lane.John: Listen, I’m calling to confirm my attendance at the wedding, Ok? But there is a problem…Luke: What happened?John: Actually, that’s my girlfriend. She’s been having a high fever since last week. We’re afraid it might be…(…)
Part 5[taxi has arrived]Taxi driver: Where to?John: Take me to Guadalupe church, please.Taxi driver: Would you rather go through downtown or Miguel Sutil avenue?John: Miguel Sutil avenue. From my house, it’s a lot faster. But do not go through the overpass, use the roundabout beneath it.Taxi driver. Sure thing. Let’s go.

Describe a car accident

Hey, guys

In our next activity, your task is to fill in a form. Imagine you’ve been involved in a car accident, and you decided to tell the insurance company. In the text you’re going to send, fill in all the fields, and in the last one (narrative report), tell them how the accident happened. Use simple past, past continuous, separable phrasal verbs and anything else you need to tell the story in detail. Some details may not apply to Brazilian context, so feel free to make those up, if necessary.

To help you, check the additional vocabulary below.
